Income Distribution in South Africa



  • Almost 30% of all workers are members of a trade union. Mining is the most unionised industry, at 79% (Labour Force Survey 2004)


  • In 2004, almost 1.5 million South Africans earned more than
    R6,000 per month. This segment has grown by 14% p.a. since 2001
    (Labour Force Survey 2004)

  • In 2004, 2.2 million South Africans earned more than R4,500
    per month. This segment has grown by 9% p.a. since 2001 (Labour
    Force Survey 2004)

  • While one quarter of high income earners (defined as earning
    more than R6,000 per month) were black in 2001, almost one third
    of high income earners were black in 2004 (Labour Force Survey
    2004)



The Labour Force Survey is a twice-yearly rotating panel household survey conducted by Stats SA, specifically designed to measure the dynamics of employment and unemployment in the country. It measures a variety of issues related to the labour market.






More South African income distribution statistics


Professor John Simpson of The UCT Unilver Institute of Strategic Marketing predicts that by 2007, disposable income will be distributed in South Africa with a 47% and 40% respectively for the black and white population groups. Futhermore black households in the upper income bracket (earning more than R154 000 a year) have grown by 368% in the period between 1998 and 2004, whilst white households in the same bracket grew by just 16% in the same
period. More
